Heat Pump FAQ's

How does an air source heat pump work?

An air source heat pump operates similarly to a fridge, but in reverse to provide heating for your home. It functions by drawing in outside air and passing it over a network of tubes containing a refrigerant. As the refrigerant interacts with the outside air, it undergoes a phase change from a liquid to a gas, absorbing heat in the process. This heat is then transferred to water, which becomes warm. Subsequently, this warmed water is circulated through your radiators or underfloor heating system, much like a traditional gas or oil-based heating system, effectively warming your home.

How reliable are air source heat pumps?

Air source heat pumps typically have a lifespan of 20 years or more, provided they are properly maintained and receive regular servicing. This longevity makes heat pumps a highly appealing choice for long-term home heating solutions. Unlike traditional boilers and oil heaters, which rely on physical substances like fuel or water, heat pumps are designed to work with air, rendering them potentially more reliable in the heating context.

Are air source heat pumps cheaper to run than a boiler?

The honest answer is, it depends! Heat pumps can be up to 500% efficient, meaning for every 1kW of energy put in, it generates up to 5kW of energy. For comparison, gas boilers typically run at 100%. Heat pumps run on electricity, which is currently around 3x more expensive than gas. That means as long as the heat pump is running at over 300% efficiency, then your running costs would be cheaper than a gas boiler. Its crucial the heat pump system is designed, sized, installed and set up correctly to make sure they run efficiently. We specialise in installing the most efficient heat pump systems! When installed to a high standard and in the right property, heat pumps can be cheaper to run than gas boilers.

Are heat pumps noisy?

Heat pumps have come a long way, nowadays they are super quiet! During normal running operation, you won’t notice the noise. There are short periods when the heat pump can be noisier, for example when defrosting or making hot water. During these periods it will be around 50-60dB, about the same as an extractor fan.

Will a heat pump keep me warm all year round?

Heat pumps have a long-standing history and are engineered to function even in extremely low temperatures, as low as -27°C. In the United Kingdom, a meticulously designed system featuring a heat pump can 100% provide and sustain a comfortable indoor temperature all year round. The key factor lies in tailoring the system to suit your specific home.

How can I get money off a heat pump?

You may be eligible for a £7,500 government grant via the boiler upgrade scheme. Theres no strings attached, just a few key criteria points to meet. This grant is only given out via MCS certified installation companies, to give the homeowner complete protection.

You may qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant if all of the following criteria are met:

  1. You are the owner of the property, for which you are seeking the grant, including properties used for business, as second homes, or properties rented out to tenants.

  2. You currently have a fossil fuel-based heating system, such as oil, gas, or electric boilers.

We will take care of the application process and all the paperwork for you.

Solar FAQ's

How much money will solar save me?

Solar panels can significantly reduce your electricity bills by generating your own clean energy. On average, homeowners save between and £700-£1500 per year, but actual savings depend on factors like your energy usage, roof size and orientation, local sunlight levels, and whether you have a battery to store excess power. We offer a free survey to provide a personalised estimate tailored to your home.

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity you can use to power your home. Any extra energy can be stored in a battery or sent back to the grid.

What does a battery do?

Batteries store the extra energy your solar panels generate during the day so you can use it later, like at night or when the sun isn’t shining. They also let you charge up overnight using cheaper electricity tariffs, so you can save money by using stored energy during peak times when electricity is more expensive.

How long do solar panels last?

Imagine having a friend that sticks around for 25 to 30 years—that’s how long solar panels can last! They’re tough cookies and can keep making electricity for a long, long time. Our panels have a 30 year performance warranty and 25 manufactures warranty.

How much do solar panels cost?

Solar panels used to be a bit pricey, but now they’re getting more affordable. At Greenwave, a typical solar 10-16 panel system with a 5kW battery costs around £8,000 to £10,000. If you choose to install solar panels without a battery, the price is usually about £2,500 less. We’ll provide a personalised quote based on your home and energy needs to find the best option for you.

Are there incentives for installing solar panels?

Unfortunately there is no grant available for Solar, although the government have made Solar panels and batteries VAT FREE.

Do solar panels work in cloudy weather?

Rain or shine, solar panels still do their thing! While they love sunny days the most, they can still make electricity on cloudy days. Panels have improved massively over the years and can generate electricity all year round.
